What is Reiki?

When you get an injury, what is your first reaction- without thinking too much about it? When your stomach hurts, what is the first thing that you do? Or when you get a headache or brain-freeze? You'll probably realize that we tend to use our hands to grasp the area in pain for comfort. But why do we do this? Everything in the universe, including us, is made up of energy. Reiki is based on the principle that this energy can actually be channeled through the hands to heal.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese art designed to promote restoration, healing, and relaxation. During a Reiki session, you will lay down, in regular daily clothes or whatever is comfortable. The Reiki practitioner will place their hands on or just above your body, without applying any pressure. As the receiver, you will just relax- closing the eyes and enjoying the session. The Reiki practitioner will place their hands on your body- without any pressure, on different energy centers. The goal of Reiki is to clear blockages of energy in the body and to kick start a smooth energy flow within your own body.

This healing energy that the practitioner will be channeling to you may or may not be felt, but healing is said to occur either way. Some measurable affects of Reiki are increased blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones. Besides these measurable improvements, Reiki has been known to aide in traditional cancer and fibromyalgia treatments, increase relaxation and sleep quality, and enhance mental clarity.
